In 1999, artist Sean Campbell created this unique and colorful flag, originally called the Feather Pride Flag. It was never flown or carried as a flag, instead being used only as a graphic for magazines and later the internet. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the original Drag Pride flag can be purchased.
The phoenix is a symbol of rebirth in general, a fine symbol for the drag community, but in this case, it also symbolizes the fiery passions with which this community faces all challenges, raises awareness, and neverendingly finds new ways to fund all the causes of the greater alternative community, especially after Stonewall and during the HIV/AIDS epidemic that took so many from our ranks.
It is currently unknown why Mr. Campbell chose the colors of the background, but they are as beautiful and eye-catching as our friends in drag tend to be, and that's good enough reason for us.
